We live in a globalised world where economic growth and profit mirrors progress and success. In the course of the past fifteen years Western retailers have outsourced production to developing countries due to cheaper labor and production opportunities.

Increased purchasing power, larger volumes and lower prices have enabled developing countries such as China and India to experience rapid economic growth. Hundreds of thousands of suppliers now compete for business. As a result, millions of workers are subjected to exploitation and unethical working conditions so Western consumerism can be nurtured.

A superficial and uninformed attitude by retailers, consumers and governments has neglected the reality of the people who enables our unsustainable expenditure.
There has been a gradual change in these attitudes. Consumers are now demanding fairly produced products and have, through media exposure, gained knowledge about working conditions in supply chains. This awareness has increased the pressure on us as retailers to operate with a responsible business practice and take responsibility for the environmental challenges in our supply chain.

dna Sustainable Business Strategy is a five-year initiative that will form the foundation of the company’s ethical and environmental commitment. It is an umbrella term for several smaller strategies that will have a positive effect on the company’s business practice. The strategy is based on our Code of Conduct and the membership obligations of the Ethical Trade Initiative Norway.

A small step for us – a big step for the future.
